How to make Rakhi at Home

Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is the celebration with which people’s emotions are attached- the emotion of affection, care, fraternity and love. It is the sentiments that count on this auspicious day. Nothing could be more pleasing than a handmade rakhi.

Rakhi or the auspicious thread is generally a bejeweled silk thread whose appearance is made eye-catching with the use of religious symbols, beads, designer motifs, zaris, trinkets and precious stones. Here we help you make rakhi online. Following are the different ways of making rakhi at home:

Auspicious God Rakhi

Materials needed
• Few golden beads
• Colored thread
• Small sized buttons
• Small picture of God & Goddesses or religious symbols
Auspicious God Rakhi
Method: Tie about 5 golden beads along with a small button through a colored thread. Repeat the same along with the length of the thread. Glue or paste any auspicious symbol or picture onto the button right in the center of the thread. Your auspicious rakhi is ready.

Teddy Rakhi

Materials Needed
• Scissors
• Fevicol
• Old cloth from dupatta or T-shirt
• Cotton
• Mummy’s bindis
• Any colour ribbon
• Sparkles
• Sewing thread and needle

Method: Cut a piece of old t-short and fill it using cotton. Fold the cotton-filled piece in round shape. Glue on it black beads for eyes & red bindi for lips.
Once the face part has been made, take a piece of bigger cloth, fill the same with cotton and turn in the shape of a teddy’s body. Put sparkles and make its dress colorful. Glue or sew both the body and the face together. For wrist, tie a ribbon. Teddy rakhi is ready!

Gold & Silver Coin Rakhi

Materials Needed
• Silk thread of three colors
• Gold & silver coin
• Net Cloth

Method: Take the net cloth and twist it into a good shape making a hole in between to attach the cloth & thread together. Take red and gold silk thread and make a knot. Leave it opened on the two sides and glue the silver or gold coin in the middle. Now your sparkling gold coin rakhi is ready.

Beaded Rakhi

Materials Needed
• Gold or Silver threads - 5 or 6
• Small Beads - 20 or 30
• An old locket (any colour)

Method: Take the threads and knot evenly. Insert beads in threads and put a locket in the center of the beads. Tie the threads from both ends. Beaded rakhi is ready!

Comfy Bracelet Rakhi

Materials Needed
• Soft jersey knit or 2 inches
• Beads or sparkles
• Glue or fevicol

Method: Cut the jersey knit into 1 inch strings, about three times the length of the wrist. Keep the string a bit longer. Have someone hold the both ends of the trips & give it a good pull. The ends of the knit will twist. Make a slip-knot on one end of the strand. By using your fingers, make a loop of string right through the slip knot. Repeat it to make a chain until the length of the string becomes smaller. For embellishment, glue small beads or put sparkles. Now your bracelet rakhi is ready.

Floral-Shaped Rakhi

Materials Needed
• 2 to 3 Glaze Papers ( any colors)
• 1 Chart Paper
• Colorful Beads (floral shaped)
• Glitters
• Gum/Fevicol
• Satin thread (the color of the threads should go with the color of gloss paper that you pick)
• Scissor

Method: cut the chart paper giving it a round shape. Also cut the glaze paper in round shape. Ensure the first glaze paper’s size is equal to the size of the cut chart paper. Cut the second glaze paper a bit smaller in size and the third one smaller than the second glaze paper’s size. Paste the first big one glaze paper onto the chart paper, after that paste the two other too. Make sure the sequence of the glaze paper is from bigger to smaller. Paste a floral shaped bead in the middle. Decorate the edges with glitters. At last paste the silk thread or the satin string from both sides of rakhi. Your floral rakhi is now ready.

Swastika Rakhi

Materials Needed
• 1 Yellow colored Glaze Paper
• 1 Yellow Colored Chart Paper
• Golden Glitters
• 1 Red Sketch Pen
• 1 Red Satin Ribbon
• Gum or Fevicol

Method: Cut the chart paper making a symbol of the swastika. For perfection, draw the symbol & then cut easily. Cut a piece out of glaze paper and paste it on swastika. When it gets dried, cut it out in the shape of swastika. Color the edges of the swastika with red pen and decorate with golden glitters. Now your base for the rakhi is ready. Now paste red-colored satin string on both sides.

  • Satin ribbon of yellow color

First of all, you have to assemble yellow felt and satin ribbon together. Then, you have to put purple felt below it.   • Square shape rhinestone

Method:

We are using silk thread because from this thread, you can make vibrant and soft Rakhi. Also, silk is a skin-friendly thread. For making silk thread Rakhi, first, you have to hold the end of silk thread between your pointer fingers and thumb. Then, you have to wrap thread in three of your fingers about 18 times. After that, you have to wrap the thread around the middle of the looped thread and then, cut the ends of the two new loops of thread. Then, fan out ends of the thread with your fingers and give it a shape of a full circle. Decorate this circle of thread by placing heart-shaped rhinestone. In the end, glue the red ribbon at the bottom of the decorated thread circle and beautifully decorate the ribbon by gluing square shape rhinestone on it. Now your amazing Rakhi is ready.
